As we all know, the Carbon Tax will take place in July, so now is the time to be smart and cut back on how much energy we are consuming.
If you are looking to buy new appliances for your home or business such as Microwaves, T.V’s, Ovens etc, look out for the Energy Star rating. This label indicates it is energy efficient; the more stars it has the more energy efficient that particular appliance is.
As well as keeping an eye out for the energy star rating, there are a few things you can do yourself to reduce energy consumption and save yourself endless amounts of money:
- Turn off all appliances at the switch when you are not using them, e.g. Computer, T.V and Gaming Consoles, as standby power uses excessive amount of energy and does not save you money and reduces the life of your appliances. Consider purchasing an Ecoswitch as they turn off all your standby power at the flick of a switch.
- When purchasing a new computer consider a laptop, as it uses around 60W of power, whereas a Desktop uses 300W.
- When it comes to bathing time choose to have a shower rather then a bath. 5 minute showers are sufficient, if you need to, buy a timer.
- Wash your dishes in a sink rather then using a dishwasher.
- Only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
- When washing clothes, only put a full load on.
- Turn off the lights once you leave the room.
- When you wake up in the morning, instead of turning the light on, open your curtains and let light into your room that way.
- Save energy by drying your clothes on the clothes line rather than using the dryer.
- If you can, switch from electric to gas hot water.
- Try and use a Microwave to cook your meal whenever possible, as it uses less than half the energy of an oven.
- Switch over to energy saving light globes, e.g Compact Fluorescent lamps such as Earthmates or LED lamps.
